Larnaca - From Ancient Civilisation To Tourist Destination

Legend has it that the first settlement in the area that became Larnaca (then known as Kition) was founded by Noah's great-grandson Kittim. At one time Kition was the principal colony in Cyprus, of the ancient civilisation of Phoenicia until becoming part of the Greek Hellenistic world.

The ancient site is at the north end of modern day Larnaca, with the earliest remains believed to go back to the Mycenean age (circa 1400-1100 BC). It was during this period that The Kition City Kingdom was established by the Greeks, and it enjoyed the dual position of being both a rich port and a major centre of the copper trade. It is also alluded to, in a list of allies of King Assurbanipal of Assyria, that Kition was still a recent settlement in the 7th century BC. The discovery of an official monument of King Sargon II also suggests that Kition was the administrative centre during this time.

During the Ionian Greek revolts of the 4th century BC, Kition led the side that was loyal to Persia and was besieged by an Athenian force in 449 BC. Relics from this siege can still be seen at Larnaca's ancient site.

The Byzantine period of Larnaca was of great importance. This period left many great monuments, including the 9th century AD Basilica of Saint Lazarus - a stunning reminder of Larnaca's rich history. The town regained its former standing during the time it was under Ottoman rule, when it became the diplomatic and commercial centre of Cyprus, and it was into Larnaca that the British landed in 1878; thus beginning their rule of the island - a rule that lasted until 1960.

The more recent development of the city follows the fast development of the entire country. Larnaca's population in 1973 was just 22,000 but after the Turkish invasion of 1974 when 200,000 people were forcibly displaced by the Turkish army, Larnaca welcomed over 40,000 refugees, tripling its population practically overnight, adding another chapter to its history and helping to reinforce its growing reputation as a prime tourist destination, with car hire in Larnaca helping visitors discover the ancient site and monuments for themselves.

Being in existence from the early dawn of history, Larnaca has had its fair share of visitors over the years with the Greeks, the Persians, the Egyptians, the Romans, the Venetians, the Turks and the British having occupied the land at one point. There is also a small airport but unfortunately there is no air service from Darwin. The origin of Chinese leather silhouette show is both beautiful and sad. During the Han Dynasty, Liu Zhe, Emperor Wu, was fond of all types of entertainment and he kept many artists in his palace for the sole purpose of entertaining him and his guests. Among the artists was Li Yannian, who was good in playing different kinds of musical instruments and improvising songs.

One day the King Quizi, a tribe from northwest of China, came to pay homage to Liu Zhe. During the banquet, Li Yannian sang about an exceedingly beautiful woman. The people were mesmerized by the song and were completely taken up by it. Then people reported to the emperor that Li Yannian had an extremely beautiful sister, who could compete with the beauty depicted in Li Yannian's song. On hearing this, the emperor summoned the sister and immediately fell in love with her.

The sister became the emperor's concubine and a year later, she gave birth to a baby boy. However, soon after, the sister fell ill and when the emperor came to visit her, she hid her face with a quilt as the illness had robbed her off her good looks. She asked the emperor to leave her room and soon after that she died.

Heartbroken, the emperor summoned a necromancer to call the spirit of his beloved concubine. However, the necromancer could not fulfill this wish. He was worried about the emperor's wrath and later in the evening as he was pacing in his room with worry, he saw his shadow reflected on the wall. Suddenly an idea hit him and he took the concubine's portrait and cut a life-like silhouette using a piece of leather. He then colored it and after that invited Emperor Wu to the room. One entering, the emperor saw the silhouette of his concubine coming up slowly and kneeling down with respect. As the emperor tried to approach the silhouette, the necromancer stopped him saying that the spirit needed a respectful distance.

This led to the start of the famous Chinese leather silhouette show as the art form was passed down from descendents of the necromancer.

Shaolin Temple Of China

The famous Shaolin Temple is located in the beautiful Songshan Mountains, which is 50 miles southwest of Zhenzhou, the capital of Henan Province. It is just 8 miles from Dengfeng. It is the most famous temple in entire China renowned for its martial arts and its contribution to Chinese Buddhism.

The temple was established in 495 AD during the rule of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386 - 534 AD). Batuo, and Indian Buddhist monk, came to Luoyang , the capital city of the dynasty, with the view of spreading Buddhism. Incidently, Emperor Xiaowen was a follower and believer so he decided to build a temple in Songshan Mountains for Batuo to live in. Here the monk translated many Buddhist works and established a faithful following.

In 517 AD, another Buddhist monk, Damo came to live in the temple. Damo is the creator of Chinese Zen. Many people believe that Damo wrote the famous Yijinjing, on which Gongfu or Shaolin martial arts is based. However, there is no comprehensive evidence. There are others who believe it was a Taoist priest from Tiantai Mountain who wrote Yijinjing in 1624. To add to mystery this priest, Zongheng, made up a story telling people that Damo wrote it.

The temple plays an important role in Chinese martial arts. It is believed that all martial arts in China emerged from Shaolin. The temple was strategically located and had to find ways and means of protecting itself from invaders. The temple also was supported by different dynasties over centuries. This is because 13 Shaolin monks saved Li Shimin, the emperor of Tang Dynasty. After this, the temple was allowed to keep monks who were also soldiers. During the Ming Dynasty, the temple had over 1,000 soldier monks and the emperor used them to quell rebellions and to fight against Japanese bandits. However, during the Qing Dynasty (1316 - 1644), martial arts were forbidden by law.

Although the Shaolin Temple had soldier monks, it was always being attacked. A few times it was severely damaged by fire. However, the biggest destruction was done by Shi Yousan, a warlord, who set fire to temple in 1928 and destroyed most of the buildings.

Today one can see over 300 ancient inscriptions on stone and 232 pagoda from different dynasties. The oldest pagoda dates back to Tang Dynasty. These pagodas are tombs of notable Shaolin monks. There is also a large mural in the Qianfo Hall dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

Huabiao - The Ornamental Pillar Of China

Huabiao is an ornamental pillar of China made from marble with engraving of twisted dragons and clouds. This pillar was used as a decoration in important building in ancient China. In fact, one can see a Huabiao right in front of Tiananmen in Beijing.

The origin of Huabiao dates back to 4,000 years when Yao and Shun were the kings. They got wooden columns placed along roads to serve as landmarks and road signs for travelers. However, there is another story floating around about the origin of Huabiao. It is believed that during 770 BC and 476 BC, a pole-like instrument known as Biao was used to determine the direction and position of a construction. As the constructions became larger and more complex, stone Biaos were used. This ultimately led to the Biao being part of the building structure itself. Today, the role of the Biao or Huabiao is just ornamental.

If you go to Tiananmen, you will find two Huabiaos in front of the gate and two behind the gate. Right on top of the Huabiao is a mythical animal called Hou. It is believed that the positioning of heads of the animals serve to remind the emperor of the hopes and wishes of the people of his kingdom. The two Huabiaos in the front are facing south, away from the palace. They are suppose to be awaiting the emperor's return and are named Wangjungui. They were meant to recall the emperor when he has been away from his palace for too long. The two Huabiaos behind the gate face the palace and are called Wangjunchu. These remind the emperor to go out of his palace and mix with the ordinary people so that he could understand their lives better.

The Huabiao -- the ornamental pillar of China -- truly is an architectural marvel. It is evidence of China's rich and long history.

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is a popular location for many people seeking a holiday in the sun. There's much more to this island paradise than its holiday resorts.

Once a Greek colony, the island of Cyprus has a long and spectacular history. Indeed, it has been described by some as a location where history really comes alive. When visiting the island, many tourists like to take the time to explore, allowing them to see much more than the popular beach resorts.

In recent years, much of the island's history has become dominated by politics. The northern part of the island is occupied by Turkish Cypriots, while the southern portion of the island remains an independent state, with close ties to Greece.

The United Nations does not recognise the existence of the Turkish-occupied part of the island as a country in its own right. Although it is possible to visit Northern Cyprus, travellers from the UK have to fly their via Turkey.

In this divided island, even the capital city holds an unusual position. Nicosia has a fortified border running through it, separating the Greek and Turkish communities.

Travel Europe - EuroStar Opens Up Europe from London

With the opening of the new EuroStar Rail Terminal at London's St Pancras station (next door to Kings Cross), almost any capital in Europe is but a fast train journey from the centre of London. Whether you are a UK resident, or indeed from' across the pond' as the Brits lovingly refer the Americans, this indeed opens up all sorts of possibilities for the intrepid traveller or indeed the serious railway anorak!

But look at what has opened up for anyone living or vacationing in the UK. You can rocket to over 100 destinations across France, Belgium or the Netherlands. Speed from London at just under 200 miles an hour to enjoy the excitement of Disneyland Paris, and then arrive back in London in time for tea and bed!

Now I know you could have done it by plane prior to the new rail network opening, but at nearly 200 miles per hour and no having to get to the station with a least two hours for security clearance means that day trips and back to any of these 100 destinations can be done faster than by air! And even the cost is staggeringly low, when you think of the massive costs involved in building the fist be railway line in the UK for over 100 years.

For around £70 per person, you could set off from London in the morning, stay at a good hotel in Paris overnight, and return leisurely on your high speed ground chariot (no flying fears) the next day. That's less than it could cost to stay the night in London!

Look at this, You could catch the 14.34 from London, be in the resort at Disneyland Paris at 16.3. Spend that evening, and all nest morning at Disneyland Paris, and catch the high speed train back at 14.35 the next day. Your kids and grandkids will be totally 'gobsmacked!'

Several years ago, a small group of us spent the weekend in Paris, an absolutely wonderful experience. We took in many of the usual attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame, and the beautiful and so peaceful Sacre Coeur ... When we landed at Paris airport, we were taken by local train to the Gare du Nord railway station, to start our adventure into Paris. Interestingly, we had to carefully weigh our luggage for the weekend, had to get to Gatwick two hours before the fight departed, and on the way back, had to get to Charles de Gaulle airport from the Gare du Nord railway station, also allowing two hours prior to departure.

Last week we revisited out experience, but this time by EuroStar. No travelling to Gatwick and trying to park the car as cheaply as possible, or getting there far too early. We simply got on a local train at St Neots, which trundled down to Kings Cross, got off there, walked across to S Pancreas, tried a few champagnes at the biggest Champaign bar in Europe, we then sauntered to our awaiting EuroStar train, and settled down to a high speed train ride right up to the Gare du Nord station in Paris.

Now that's what I call progress...using good old nineteenth century railway concepts - beats flying into a cocked hat!

It is an ideal spot to set up camp and head around the beach for a lengthy and captivating walk.

Once you are beached out, head to Avoca Lake for a picnic and enjoy the beauty of this beautiful attraction. The Avoca Drive Bridge separates the Lake into two, and as it is close to the Avoca Beach is an ideal alternative if you prefer the still waters with some space to throw a frisbee.

The Captain Cook Lookout is a must see, with unparalleled views up and down the coastline. You can reach it from First Point headland, and it is an easy walk with great rewards. Avoca Beach is one of those spots that have ample diversity in attractions, yet all is in close proximity to each other.

Art lovers and those with creative flair will be including the Avoca Art Gallery on the list, with a large selection of local artworks and handicrafts available to be enjoyed and more than likely inspire you to start on your own. The Dublin Castle And Its Courtyards

The Dublin Castle is among the most important structures in Ireland. In 1210, it was built on the orders of the first Lord of Ireland, King John. Over the years, the Dublin Castle has evolved from a defensive fortress to an administrative center and a vice-regal court. It has suffered from several destructions, but the worst attack made against it was in 1534, when "Silken Thomas" Fitzgerald, a courtier who had relinquished his loyalty to the English Crown, led an uprising.

The Dublin Castle has faced many changes, not only physically, but also in terms of the governing powers that resided within it. The castle has stood for centuries and has been constantly repaired, refurbished, and kept in the state that it is at present. Unlike before, the use of the castle is now primarily for ceremonial purposes. Tourists are free to go around the courtyards, luxuriant state apartments, and museums within it.

The Castle is located in Dublin Center along Dame Street. It is comprised of several courtyards and buildings that originate from different times in the history of Ireland. The Dublin Castle is home to some of the oldest architectural styles in the country. Here are some of the main features of the castle that you should visit:

1. St. Patrick's Hall

A trip to the Dublin Castle would be pointless if you don't visit St. Patrick's Hall, which is one of the famous halls in Ireland. This hall, which is dedicated to the patron saint of the country, the paintings on its ceilings was done by Vincenzo Valdre that showcases different events in Irish and British history.

2. The Throne Room

The Throne Room also has its share of extraordinary artwork and architecture. It is the most majestic state apartment in the castle that used to serve as the chamber for Irish Monarchs. In it are four ornaments made by Gaetano Gandolfi that depict Mars, Juno, Jupiter, and Minerva.

3. The Chester Beatty Library and Gallery

In 1999, one of the finest collections of Oriental art in the world that is owned by Sir Alfred Chester Beatty was moved into its galleries.

4. State Drawing Room and State Dining Room

The State Drawing Room used to be the receiving room, but it is not used as an entertainment area for foreign dignitaries. The State Dining Room dates from the initial construction of the castle.

5. The Bedford Tower

This clock tower dates from the 18th century. Its base is the Norman gate of the castle. The Irish Crown Jewels - a diamond Badge and the St. Patrick Star - were stolen from this tower in 1907 and unfortunately were never recovered.

6. Garda Siochana Museum

This museum is located in the Record Tower, which is what only remains of the original castle. It showcases a detailed history of the Irish police force.

This strong sense of culture is evident in the heritage buildings, the galleries and the museums of Melbourne and has given it a reputation as a city of creative expression, which is reflected in the music, theatre and festival scene. An interesting, diverse and very cosmopolitan city, any holiday here is going to be an intriguing mix of history, art, sport and beaches thrown in with all the attractions of a modern and cutting edge city.

At the forefront of the arts and culture scene is the Melbourne Museum, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Heritage Travel - Provence, Where Cultural And Environmental Heritage Meet

Famous for its cuisine and its beaches, its olive trees and its lavender, the southern French region of Provence - Côte d'Azur also offers perhaps the most stunning and interesting opportunities for heritage tourism of any region in France. And not just natural heritage; with a civilization going back further than that of Paris and the center of modern France, it is also a region that boasts a rich cultural heritage, and one of the best collections of Roman remains outside Italy.

Many travellers might indeed be hard-pressed to find a downside to this magnificent region in the south of France; but a word of warning, Provence should not be thought of as a sort of Heaven on Earth; drivers stuck in a motorway traffic jam on a Saturday afternoon in mid summer might be forgiven for thinking that Provence is Hell on Earth. Overcrowded resorts and beaches, expensive facilities, high temperatures, traffic jams - all of these can be considered as the downside to holidays in Provence and the Riviera, specially in July and August. Yet for discerning travellers more interested in heritage tourism than beaches, the downside to Provence in the summer is of little concern.

Like California, the Provence - Riviera region is one which not only has beaches where people can be seen stretched out on the sand even in winter; it also has high Alpine peaks where the snow still lies, even in summer; and the two are less than 100 km. apart. Three of France's six National Parks are in Provence, and the region also boasts a variety of other regional nature parks or natural reserves, and a number of listed natural areas, from the famous Camargue, one of the major wetlands of Europe to the Queyras, a high mountain Alpine park.

As far as cultural heritage is concerned, the region, together with the neighbouring area around Nimes, offers a marvellous collection of Roman temples, Roman arenas and amphitheatres such as the one at Orange, - used every year for the famous opera festival - and the Pont du Gard, one of the best surviving Roman aqueducts. Slightly less ancient, but still very old, are the area's famous Romanesque churches, such as Saint Trophime at Arles, the Palace of the Popes at Avignon, and the many historic towns and villages, built in the local honey-coloured stone, with their narrow streets, traditional markets, and old houses.

With its beaches as well as the exceptional cultural and natural heritage of Provence , it is hardly surprising that this region is the most popular region in France for tourists and holidaymakers; it is a region that has it all!

When to travel to Provence:

In short, any time of the year. The climate in Provence is Mediterranean, hot in summer, milder than most of the rest of Europe at other times. Though be warned; don't expect summer in winter! Away from the coast, and more so in the mountains, winter weather can be cold, and snow, though rare in most low-lying areas, is an occasional possibility anywhere.

The next time you eat a Hershey's chocolate bar, or Hershey's Kisses™, think about the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, where Hershey's Kisses™ streetlights line the streets, and where Hershey's candy is manufactured. In 1903, millionaire Milton S. Hershey purchased a parcel of land which would later be known as Hershey, Pennsylvania, and would soon become the home of the Hershey chocolate factory. The Hershey's chocolate bar had just been created in 1900, and Hershey's Kisses™ would be invented in 1907. This was incredibly significant, because the creation of milk chocolate candy had just been introduced at the world's fair in the 1890s.

Milton Hershey, who had just sold his caramel candy company for $1 million, was in the market for his next business venture. Ever the savvy businessman and entrepreneur, Hershey purchased milk chocolate candy-producing equipment at the world's fair, and created what is now known as Hershey Chocolate USA, which has continued to exist and produce candy right thru the present day.

Today, Hershey Chocolate USA continues to produce its chocolate candies in the original Hershey, PA manufacturing plant, which was built by Mr. Hershey himself in the early 1900s.
